Thomas Duffy VC, correction re grave location
It has long been assumed that the grave in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin, of Thomas Duffy was that of Thomas Duffy VC, and that along with that he died in 76 Upper Dorset Street, Dublin. However this Thomas Duffy was not a soldier but a corn merchant as confirmed by entries in the "Ireland, City and Regional Directories 1792-1949", for the years 1855,1856 and 1858. During these years our gallant Thomas Duffy VC was soldiering in India from 1841 (sailing aboard the Justina) to 1861. In this image, Duffy is the gentleman in the middle left of the picture wearing a black hat. Not being an officer, he is without a sword. Image from Neill's Blue Caps, Vol 2, 1826-1914. We cannot pinpoint the exact location where Thomas Duffy VC is buried but it is somewhere in the area of his home town, Athlone.
Our thanks goes again to Shane McCormack and Gearóid O'Brien from Athlone for their painstaking research.
