In 1920 Britain had been granted a League of Nations Mandate to rule Palestine. In April 1936 Arab discontent at British rule and the increasing pace of Jewish settlements led to strikes and riots which escalated into the Arab Revolt of 1936-39 (see J E Mott EGM/GC and T Bogdanovitch EGM/GC).

Citation

 The KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the Award of the Medal of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire to the undermentioned, for gallant and distinguished services rendered in connection with the emergency operations in Palestine, during the period 15th April to 14th September, 1936:– For Gallantry. No. 3128287 Lance-Corporal William Barnett, 1st Battalion The Royal Scots Fusiliers.
