The Indian Mutiny 1857 - 59

During the assault on Delhi on 14 September 1857, after the Third Column had taken the Kashmir Gate part of it then attacked the Water Bastion, while the remainder pushed south across the Chandni Chauk, one of the city’s main arteries running from the Red Fort in the east towards the Lahore Gate in the west, and attempted to secure the Jama Masjid, the chief mosque. Failing to force their way in they then withdrew back towards the northern wall of the city.

“Lance-Corporal Smith most gallantly carried away a wounded comrade under a heavy fire of grape and musketry on the Chaundee Chouck, in the city of Delhi, on the morning of the assault on the 14th September, 1857.” (General Order of Major-General Sir Archdale Wilson, Bart., K.C.B., dated Head Quarters, Delhi City, September 21, 1857.)
