The Second World War 1939 - 40

Temporary Lieutenant R S Armitage and Temporary Sub-Lieutenant R V Moore distinguished themselves by bomb disposal work in, respectively, South-East England and the London area during September and October 1940. Among the mines Armitage defused was one hanging from a tree at Orpington, Kent. When during the bombing of Chatham Dockyard in September 1940 an unexploded mine lodged itself 16 feet below ground, Temporary Sub Lieutenant J H Babington volunteered to deal with it. The bomb had an anti-handling device of a type of which the British had little knowledge and which had already killed a bomb disposal officer. Babington successfully defused the mine.
