9 April 1916

More details about:
The First World War Mesopotamia 1915-1918

Following the failure of the first assault on Sanna-i-Yat on 6 April 1916, the British advanced their front line and in the early morning of 9 April launched a second assault on the Turkish positions there. In the dark the British advance became disorganized and, though for a time parts of the Turkish front line were captured, the British were pushed back, eventually consolidating a line four hundred yards short of the Turkish trenches. Many British troops finding themselves in exposed positions dug trenches for better cover.

Citation

For most conspicuous bravery. He went out alone on several occasions in front of our advanced trenches, and, under heavy rifle fire and at great personal risk, assisted wounded men lying in the open. On one occasion he carried in a wounded officer to a place of safety under circumstances of great danger.
