The First World War 1917
On 31 October 1917 the British attacked and captured Beersheba as a preliminary to the final assault on Gaza and the invasion of Palestine proper. The 60th and 74th Divisions advanced against the Turkish trenches from the south-west while the Desert Mounted Corps, striking from the east, seized the town itself. Acting Corporal J Collins, 25th Battalion The Royal Welsh Fusiliers (TF), distinguished himself in the action.
