On 13 April 1855, in the British lines outside Sevastopol, Private S Evans, 19th Regiment, helped repair an embrasure of a naval 21-gun battery which had been damaged by a Russian shell. Russian fire continued while he worked.

Citation

 For volunteering to go into an embrasure, thereby rendering very great assistance in repairing damage, under a very heavy fire from the enemy, 13th April, 1855.
