More details about:
The Crimean War

From June to August 1855 the Allies launched various attacks against Taganrog on the Gulf of Taganrog at the north-east corner of the Sea of Azov. On 3 June 1855 the Russian commander there rejected the Allied ultimatum to surrender Russian vessels and supplies. Lieutenant C W Buckley (qv) and Boatswain H Cooper proceeded ashore in a four-oared gig, and destroyed various government buildings and stores.

Performed the desperate service of landing at Taganrog in presence of a large force, to set fire to the Government Stores. See preceding Memoir of Commander Buckley. (Admiral Lord Lyons’ Despatch, 6th June, 1855, No. 429.)
